We have shipped stores on both. Shopify wins when the client wants to run the shop with the least possible operations overhead and the catalog is straightforward. WooCommerce wins when the store needs to live inside a larger content site, when wholesale and retail share one catalog, or when a plugin ecosystem has to bend to a specific business rule.
The question to ask before choosing is not “which platform is better” but “who will run this store on a Tuesday afternoon” and how many people that answer involves.
